Montana Board of Nursing: Delegation

Welcome to the Nursing Delegation Module. Nursing delegation is multifaceted. It begins with decisions made at the administrative level of an organization and extends to the staff responsible for delegating, overseeing the process, and performing the responsibilities. Proper delegation involves effective communication, empowering staff to make decisions based on their judgement and support from all levels of the healthcare setting. The employer, nurse leader, individual licensed nurse, and delegatee all have specific responsibilities within the delegation process. In 2016, the Montana Board of Nursing introduced new delegation rules.

This delegation module includes a history of the rule changes, how the rule changes impact nurse practice and safety, and a work-through of scenarios where participants determine how nursing tasks can or cannot be delegated to unlicensed assistive personnel.
