Montana Board of Nursing: Role of the Board

Welcome to the Introduction of the Montana Board of Nursing. Perhaps you have found yourself asking, "What is the role of the Board of Nursing?". As nursing evolves and develops, these are a few of the tough questions to address as the health care of the nation changes. The government regulates nursing to protect the public.

The first efforts toward the regulation of nursing began in England. Although the issue of nursing regulation was raised in the late 19th century, enactment of laws to govern nursing in England was partly delayed because Florence Nightingale was opposed to regulation. In 1901, New Zealand became the first country to enact a nurse licensing law.

Shortly after, North Carolina became the first U.S. state to enact a registration law in 1903. The Montana Board of Nursing is now over 100 years old and hosts 9 members, representing all of Montana geographically. So, what exactly does the Board do? This course outlines an introduction of the role of the Montana Board of Nursing. As a nurse, it your responsibility to be familiar with the role of your state board of nursing.

This continuing nursing education activity is approved for 1.5 contact hours.
